The Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark: Pure Bliss
Heading to Ireland anytime soon? While visiting you must, must, must visit The Burren and The Cliffs of Moher Geopark. The Cliffs are located just south of the Village of Doolin in Co Clare, Ireland. The “so massive they’re frightening cliffs” ascend over 700 feet and run south for five miles to a place called Hag’s Head. They are Ireland’s premier attraction along the ocean for tourists and a must-see for anyone who visits.
Unfortunately, the weather was so bad the day we visited the Cliffs, the main ferry tours were shut down for the day but we were able to snap some beautiful pics of the natural beauty between the Atlantic Ocean and a few sharp peaks of land anyway. What we couldn’t get pictures of were the cliffs at Hag’s Head that reach 390 ft above the Atlantic. Some of the Cliffs actually rise 702 feet high just north of O’Brien’s Tower.
Since I’m such a celebrity/movie buff, I loved learning about the cameo appearances these beautiful cliffs were able to make on the big screen. It has been said these cliffs have made more film appearances than some movie stars. They’ve been seen in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Ryan’s Daughter, the Princess Bride, and The Mackintosh Man just to name a few.
The Burren is known for its landscape and the physical proof of its Ice Age legacy is excellent to witness in person. I was taken back by this beautiful view of the ocean and the interesting terrain of limestone fields. The fields include a vast array of flora, including Arctic and Alpine flowers that grow alongside Mediterranean species.
